Phyllis A. Rose was born on
February 5, 1970 in Great Bend, Kansas.
During her childhood years, she received a call to be a missionary by
often “thinking about helping people in another country”.
Phyllis began attending children’s
church at Great Bend First Assembly around age 6 via the church bus route. She was soon involved in the Missionette
Program and then a few years later in the youth group. During high school she worked part-time at
the Berean Christian Pre-School at the church which became full-time during the
summers. Being a part of First Assembly
was not just great experience, it was a blast!
In 1990, Phyllis moved to
Springfield, Missouri where she attended Central Bible College. Graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor’s Degree
in Missions and Bible, she moved to Terre Haute, Indiana where she completed
her church internship.
After interning, she moved to
Falcon, North Carolina to work at Falcon Children’s Home as an Associate
Houseparent. Living and being a part of
the children’s lives was a great challenge and joy! There are some things Bible College cannot
teach you that Falcon Children’s Home can!
After being a houseparent for over two years, she transferred from
working the “halls” where the children reside to the children’s home office as
secretary for the social workers and director of campus life.
In 1996, Phyllis moved to Dunn,
North Carolina and became a church secretary for Glad Tidings Assembly of
God. Having always enjoyed being part of
a local church and its ministries, this was the place to be! Then, in 1998, Phyllis moved to Albemarle,
North Carolina to work on staff at First Assembly of God as the senior pastor’s
secretary.
In April 2002 Phyllis knew it was
time to say “yes” to the Lord and to pursue the call to foreign missions that had
been on her life since childhood. A year
later, God opened a door for her to serve a two year missionary associate term with
a veteran missionary in Tegucigalpa, Honduras – Becky Hoshaw. Phyllis taught English classes – levels 1, 2,
& 3 and also a phonics class. She
also traveled throughout the country of Honduras with Becky, who is the country
coordinator for Latin America ChildCare in Honduras, and assisted in educational
seminars, workshops and other activities and events. What a great opportunity God provided!
In 2005 God began to stir in Phyllis’ heart a love for the people of
Peru. After raising her funds, she
landed in Lima, Peru on September 30, 2008.
Since that time, she has been working alongside Bill and Lena Shrader,
Assemblies of God missionaries, with Latin America ChildCare in Peru. LACC is a
sponsorship ministry with specific goals to help children in need. The Mission
of Latin America ChildCare is the transformation of children by means of a
relationship with Jesus Christ through a quality education and other ministries
of compassion. The shared vision of this
community of committed people is: 1. COMPASSION -
Caring for children through nutrition, health care and spiritual
formation programs. 2. EDUCATION - Applying
knowledge and skills in the real-life context of students. 3. TRANSFORMATION - Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ
through our words and deeds with children, their families and their community. LACC represents the largest network of
Evangelical Christian Schools in Latin America with 300 schools in 21 countries
affecting the lives of nearly 100,000 children each day. Over the last 46 years
more than a million children have attended an LACC school.
During Phyllis' second term she hopes to minister to the children who live in the government orphanages. These children have been orphaned or abandoned by people, but not from God. The dream is to get other Assembly of God churches in Peru involved and that one day a foster care program will be established.
Phyllis returned to Peru to begin her second term on June 11, 2013.
